How To Load Patches Into The XP
The XPs (the XP-30, XP-50, XP-60, and XP-80) can only load the MIDI files found on this page. XPs cannot load SysEx files so there is no need to download them if you plan on loading the Patches onto your XP through the disk drive.
There are two ways you can load the Patches into your XP.
1. Using The XP's Floppy Drive (XP-50, XP-60, and XP-80 only).
- Download the "MIDI file version" of the Patch you wish to load into your XP.
- Decompress the file. Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X have built-in .zip file decompression. Just double-click on the file to decompress it in Windows or Mac OS X. For earlier versions of Windows, use
WinZip. For earlier versions of Mac OS, use StuffIt Expander. Both WinZip and StuffIt Expander for such old operating systems will be difficult to find, so be forewarned. Update your OS. :-)
- Read the readme.txt file if you are interested. Of course it's not required.
- Copy the MIDI file (the file name ends in ".mid") to a PC formatted floppy disk (it can be either a 720 k or 1.44 MB floppy disk). Since few modern computers still cary floppy drives, you'll probably have to use a USB floppy drive to do this.
- Take the floppy disk out of your comptuer's floppy drive and put it into your XP's floppy drive.
- Press SEQUENCER and use the VALUE dial to locate the MIDI file on the floppy disk.
- Press the STOP/PLAY button to play the short sequence. You will not hear any sounds from your XP but the MIDI file contains system exclusive data which loads the Patch into your XP's temporary Patch memory. When the sequence stops playing (the STOP/PLAY light will go off) you can switch to Patch mode (by pressing PATCH) and try out the newly loaded Patch. If you like the Patch you can save it to your USER memory bank. If not, you can simply change Patches and the newly loaded Patch will be erased from memory (but not erased from the floppy disk).
2. Using Patch Editing/Librarian Software Or Sequencer Software On Your Computer (all XPs and JVs).
You can use either the MIDI file or the SysEx file. Your comptuer must be connected to your XP synth via MIDI cables to be able to transfer the Patch data from the computer to your synth without using a floppy disk
NOTE that this procedure should also work for any JV synth connected to your computer.
Most sequencing software can import SysEx files (system exclusive files with names that usually end in ".syx"), but some sequencers cannot in which case you must use the MIDI files. The procedure for loading MIDI files and SysEx files will likely vary with your sequencing software. I have only used Logic Pro for Mac OS X. I do no know anything about other sequencing packages so e-mailing me about it won't help. Sorry. :-)

- You will have to consult the documentation on how to send SysEx data to MIDI devices through your software. If you downloaded the MIDI file you'll be able to play that file through to your XP or JV and that will load the Patch (depending on your sequencing software configuration regarding system exclusive data transmission). You will not hear any sound from the synth but the data should be loaded into your XP's or JV's temporary Patch memory for you to audition and save to a USER bank if you wish.
