A ring modulator works by taking an inharmonic multiple (the high-frequency wave at the bottom of the graphic above) of an input signal (the low-frequency wave at the top of the graphic above) and multiplying the two together. This causes a "ringing" (high pitch sound) to be heard on top of the original waveform.
